One night in May, 2013, two sisters in my church and I were riding home on our bicycles after doing church work.
It was about 9:00 p.m. with few pedestrians on the road. As there were no street lights, it was all pitch dark. When we were about halfway home, it suddenly began to rain. Eager to get home quickly, we automatically sped up.
To our surprise, it started raining harder and harder, to the extent that we could hardly keep our eyes open and got soaked through. In spite of this, we kept pedaling forward furiously. Suddenly, I heard a bang. Before I could figure out what had happened, a minivan careened in front of me as if it had lost its brakes. Wiping the rain from my face, I looked in the direction of the bang, only to see the sister who had been riding behind me lying on the ground 5 or 6 meters in front of me. Not wasting any time, I hurriedly ran over to check her condition. When I came near her, I found a bicycle, completely mangled, lying on the sister, who was motionless on the ground as if she was dead. The scene before my eyes made me uncontrollably shiver with heart thumping hard. I immediately removed the bicycle with another sister, and then we repeatedly cried the wounded sister’s name in a weeping tone, but no matter how we called her name, she remained unresponsive.
At that time, the driver of the minivan rushed to us. Seeing the sister was knocked unconscious, he hastily picked her up and ran to his minivan. I immediately followed him, leaving another sister at the accident site. On the way to the hospital, the driver nervously said to me, “Talk to her! Keep her awake!” Hearing this, I urgently called the sister’s name while constantly praying to God and asking Him to protect her. But no matter how I called, she stayed unconscious, which increased my anxiety. Just when I was at a loss, I remembered the following words, “You shouldn’t be afraid of this and that. No matter how many difficulties and dangers you face, you shall remain steady before Me….” I thought to myself: “That’s right. God is my support. I can’t get panicked. I should quiet myself before God. In the Age of Grace, the Lord Jesus brought Lazarus, a dead man, back from the grave, which showed us God’s unique authority. God determines man’s life and death. Whether the sister will survive or not is decided by Him. I should entrust her into God’s hands.”
When I earnestly prayed to God and looked to Him, I noticed that the sister moved her hands and then crossed her fingers to make a posture of prayer. Seeing her come around and pray to God, I was both surprised and moved, tears uncontrollably flowing down my face. When I truly quieted my heart to entrust the sister’s life into God’s hands and let Him rule over it, God listened to my prayers and delivered her out of danger. This allowed me to truly witness God’s mighty power. At that time, I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
About 10 minutes later, we arrived at the hospital. After a thorough examination, the doctor told us, “She only suffers a slight injury to her head and she doesn’t have a concussion. The fracture on her leg is not serious. She’ll be fine after recuperating for a short period of time.” After the doctor left, the sister said to me, “After I got struck, there was a moment when I really wanted to sleep. But when I silently prayed to God, I became quite sober in my mind and no longer felt pain. God was truly watching over me and was by my side. Besides, I only suffer a light injury in such a serious accident. It’s really all because of God’s protection!” Hearing this, I nodded in agreement, and we both said, “Thanks be to God!”
The next day when I saw the minivan outside the hospital building, I became somewhat dumbfounded: A chunk of its hood was knocked off and the tires were all flat. Even the driver himself didn’t know how we made the hospital the night before. I thought: “It’s really a miracle that we were able to get to the hospital in this wrecked minivan. God is so almighty! Moreover, the sister was only slightly injured. It is really thanks to God’s protection!”
Whenever I recall this accident, there is always some lingering fear in my heart. I deeply feel that we humans are unable to predict what will happen to us or what disasters will befall us every day. Without God’s protection and care, we could lose our lives in disasters at any time. In this experience, I have gained more insights into God’s rule over everything, and appreciate that only God can protect and care for us. Just as the Bible says, “I am Jehovah that makes all things; that stretches forth the heavens alone; that spreads abroad the earth by myself” (Isaiah 44:24), and “Because you have made Jehovah, which is my refuge, even the most High, your habitation; There shall no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone” (Psalms 91:9-12).
